Madeline Wilson is a fine arts photographer based in Boulder, Colorado, whose practice includes photography and mixed media. She draws deep inspiration from time spent in the outdoors, as well as from music, travel, her creative community, and artists such as Stephen Shore, William Eggleston, Lorna Simpson, and Penny Umbrico.
Practicing photography since the 1970s, Madeline’s work has evolved from traditional black-and-white darkroom printing through Cibachrome and color negative processes to digital imagery. She holds an MFA from New York University and a BFA from Bard College. For nearly 25 years, she taught photography and video full-time, serving as Chair of the Art Department at The Masters School. Having lived in the New York area for most of her adult life, she has exhibited her work widely throughout the region. Her return to tactile, mixed-media processes offers a hands-on sanctuary from the digital workspace.
Across mediums, Madeline’s conceptual process examines permanence, obfuscation, deconstruction, reconstruction, and natural reclamation. At its core, her work is driven by the desire to capture and preserve elements of the past within the present.
“My artistic practice includes working with found objects to create mixed-media work. Like the photographs, materials and objects are discovered and then crafted into works addressing questions of permanence, obfuscation, deconstruction and reconstruction, and natural reclamation. The ability to capture and hold objects of the past in the present, in a new form, creates the basis of my artistic pursuits."
